Etiquette [from the French étiquette > label, tag] refers to a set of rules of polite behavior in society.
As the dictionary suggests, étiquette originally meant a small slip of paper — an information label. It might have shown, for example, the composition of a medicine or indicated a place at the table during a banquet. Later, the meaning expanded to general rules of courtesy and social conduct.
If there were a Printer’s Map of Europe, Otrokovice would be marked with a much larger dot than its 20,000 inhabitants might suggest.
